The fight for women's voting rights has rarely been given as dramatic a treatment as in Iron Jawed Angels. Hilary Swank (Boys Don't Cry) and Frances O'Connor (Mansfield Park) star as second-wave suffragettes Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, who led the final fight for the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. Though the movie sometimes tries too hard to avoid the stigma of a period piece (the soundtrack features electric guitars, Swank has a steamy moment in a bathtub, and the editing is jagged and flashy), the mounting energy of the fight--and the increasingly nasty opposition--gains real momentum when a wartime picket line leads to Paul, Burns, and their sisters-in-arms being arrested on trumped-up charges and imprisoned. Good movie - accurately portrayed - except for one scene that seemed to be added to make this movie a little more risque. Other than that 30 seconds to one minute scene (that seemed a little out of context) this was a great movie.

My right to vote - never gave it much thought. I now have a new appreciation for the privilege; and recommend this film to anyone not familiar with this piece of our history. You'll be enlightened.
Great Movie about Women's Rights November 20, 2008
Even though the title of this movie may sound a little strange, it is a movie worth seeing. The movie focuses on the efforts and determination of Alice Paul and Lucy Burns and their quest to give women the right to vote. I watched this movie for the first time only a couple weeks before the election in November of this year. By watching this movie before I voted for the next President for the first time, I began to realize that if these women and the others who shared their dream did not speak out, I may not have been allowed to vote. After watching this movie, I began to appreciate all that women in our country and in other countries around the world have fought so long and so hard for. If you want to learn more about how women gained the right to vote or if you want to know more about women's rights in general, this is a great movie to see that deals with that issue. Hilary Swank, Margo Martindale, Anjelica Huston, and Patrick Dempsey are only few of the actors and actresses in this movie that make it a movie worth seeing!
Impactful - not just for "girls" November 19, 2008
I was skeptical when I saw an email about this video, so I ordered it from the Library and watched it with my boyfriend. It made such a huge impact on both of us we BOTH bought a copy. We're encouraging everyone to watch this video. Very true-to-life - no "fluff" and no "sparkle" - just the facts portrayed in a very professional movie format. I'll never take my right to vote for granted again. Ever.
Fantastic suffrage lesson November 17, 2008
I bought this video after getting an email about how Alice Paul, Lucy Burns and their fellow suffragettes were treated after protesting and petitioning for the right to vote. I knew I would want it in my DVD collection, but thought it might be something for my classroom as well. I teach social studies and thought it would be a good addition to my election lessons. With the exception of a couple inappropriate moments (easily taken care of with a properly placed poster board over the television screen) this movie really engaged my eighth grade students. I would also recommend it for high school government classes.
