Product Description Dexter is based on the compelling novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay. Orphaned at the age of four and harboring a traumatic secret Dexter Morgan (Dexter Morgan (Emmy- and Golden Globe- nominated actor Michael C. Hall from "Six Feet Under") is adopted by a police officer who recognizes Dexter's homicidal tendencies and guides his son to channel his gruesome passion for human vivisection in a constructive way - by killing those heinous perpetrators that are above the law or who have slipped through the cracks of justice. A respected member of the police force a perfect gentleman and a man with a soft spot for children it's hard not to like Dexter. Although his drive to kill is unflinching he struggles to emulate normal emotions he doesn't feel and to keep up his appearance as a caring socially responsible human being.System Requirements:Running Time: 655 MinsFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS Rating: NR UPC: 097368513648 Manufacturer No: 851364
Amazon.com An interesting and original idea that's very skillfully executed, Showtime's Dexter is never less than watchable, often quite compelling, and sometimes thoroughly riveting. As the 12 episodes from the show's first season (packaged here in a four disc set) reveal, it's also the epitome of "high concept," a kind of Silence of the Lambs for the C.S.I. generation. Creator-executive producer James Manos Jr.'s title character, one Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall of Six Feet Under renown), works for the Miami Police Department as an blood spatter analyst, visiting crime scenes and helping figure out what happened. He has an avocation, too: during his off hours, he tracks down some very, very bad people who for various reasons have eluded the proper authorities. Seems his adoptive father, a cop himself, taught the kid how to channel his dark side in a "positive" direction; and so, having captured these evildoers (including a child molester-murderer and a recidivist drunk driver with a trail of bodies in his wake), Dex dispatches them with clinical precision, thus making him a serial killer who snuffs serial killers. But there's more--much more, as it turns out. By his own description, Dexter is "a monster," an empty shell who fakes all human interactions and admits to no real feelings for anything or anyone, including his foster sister (Jennifer Carter) and his nominal girlfriend (Julie Benz), a former crack addict and battered spouse who's as uninterested in sex as he is. There's an explanation for Dexter's weirdness, of course, one so deep and traumatic that even he isn't aware of it. It's gradually revealed over the course of the season as he and the cops (who include Erik King, Lauren Velez, and David Zayas, all first-rate) track down the so-called "Ice Truck Killer," a fellow monster whose grisly m.o. both fascinates and taunts our hero, leading to a genuinely shocking and squirm-inducing finale. Dexter can be a bit arch, with an ironic, too-hip-for-the-room tone that get a little old. Still, it's a safe bet that anyone who views this first season will be salivating for the second. Extras include audio commentary on two episodes, a featurette about real-life blood spatter analysis, and a variety of DVD-ROM items. --Sam Graham Beyond Dexter More TV Head-cases on DVD | The Book that Started It All | More from Showtime | Stills from Dexter: The First Season (click for larger image)

Dexter-The First Season August 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you love Dexter...this is a must have! If you never saw Dexter before..now is your chance! If you like forensics, twist and turns in the plot lines that are fresh and new, the best humor and drama, great acting and characters you can sink your teeth into...Then buy this and see where it all began for Dexter. Then buy the Season Two and see where it is going to. A wonderfully written show, that is very well done all the way around. Michael C. Hall is outstanding and has been nominated for an Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama! And he deserves this award! It's that good! . You will love to not hate Dexter and find out why as each episode, his reason for being who he has become unravels in the story of Dexter. I dare you not to love the show! I thought when this show came out I would not be interested in the story line as presented. Boy, was I wrong! I am so glad I watched one show and I was hooked! I missed the beginning and was so glad to put it all together when these DVD's came out! Buy it! You won't be sorry. Watch the new season and when you are hooked as I was, then buy Season One and Seaon Two find out how it all began. It is a winner! A real Fan of Dexter's!!!!!!!
A refreshing, unpredictable, question raising series! August 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What an amazing series. Unlike most crime/mystery series I've fell in love with, such as CSI, this series delivers...each episode leaving you starved for the next peice of the puzzel. For once, you, the viewer, are not treated like an idiot.... There was no holding back as far as plot goes, as you follow the stories of several well developed characters and their plights. Mystery after mystery evolve as we follow the Miami PD in the fight against crime, We follow Dexter and his own taboo battle against the evils of the world, and of himself, and we follow the relationships of several other characters...and how their relationships bring cause and effect into heartpounding action with each new episode. There is also an overlying story that leads to the season finale, where all hints and clues you've been left admist the smaller stories come to light. WOW!
The cast is amazing and refreshingly new. Michael C. Hall (Dexter) is an amazing actor who conveys much through expression and in some cases does not even need to speak to convey exactly what is going on. If you aren't ready to purchase the series, I highly suggest you rent it and give it a fair shot. As a fussy viewer, I like to feed the id but I don't like to cross the line into foul-mouthed pointless vulgarity. I swear to you, this is the perfect mix between what reality has become, and what happens to that moral light inside all of us struggling to find a place.
The first season pretty much follows the books of Jeff Lindsay (unlike the second series :( ), and adds a great twist to the season finale. OH, and lets not forget the ASTOUNDING Music by Mr.Licht, which sets the tone again and again as you watch. A treat for the eyes, the ears, and the mind, give this series a shot! Dare to let it raise the question within you about your own shadow self. Is it evil, or is it a natural response to a society gone defunct? A thin line we walk.
dexter - the first season August 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The best show I ever seen on television. It's a smart and funny drama, you never can guess what's going to happen next. He is Dexter Morgan and he works for the crime lab in Mami,Flordia working with blood splatter. In this season he finds out why he is the way is and where he come's from. He kill's only the bad people, the people that deserve to die. I rated it at a five but, I really give it a ten. I can't wait for the next season. I have a hard time figuring out what to buy, in may opinion this is worth ever penny.
Harry's Frankenstein August 7, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I watched the entire 1st season straight thru. Clever, almost artistic the way that Dexter disposes of the VERMIN of Miami with little to no degree of difficulty. He's a well trained, well thought out "Good Guy Doing Bad Things" with sociapathic tendecies who just happens to work for the Miami Police Department as a Foresics Blood Spatter expert. Yes he's a seriel killer but he only kills the bad people who truly deserve his form of justice. The characters on this show are dead bang casted! Nobody else could really play their parts because you're drawn into them...Jennifer Carpenter is brilliant as Dexter's Spastic but cute sexy soon to be bad a@@ sister Deb who wants to be loved so badly she literally puts herself in harms way( you'll see what I mean). Harry Morgan is played by James Remar( I knew him best from his role in "The Warriors" as AJAX) to a fantastic tee, Dexters step father who teaches him that the most important things are to not get caught and to blend in with the world. Harry rescues Dexter from a crime scene that later comes back to HAUNT Dexter aswell as almost everybody else inadvertant or not. Dexter lives by the "Code Of Harry" which is the belief system or criteria Harry set up for Dexter to determine those who were or are the ones who Dexter can justify killing. In the first season Dexter finds he is very fond of his new girlfriend (Rita) & 2 kids (Aster & Cody) and really cares for Debra aswell as a developing sense of freedom internally ( this is more apparent at the end of the second season). Dexter finds he is not an only child as he believed...he has a Brother ( Rudy/Brian or Bynee). His brother has longed for a reunion and it comes at the expense of those closest to Dexter...the twist is brilliant and is the reason you'll be hooked!!! Ther supporting cast rounded out by Eric King as SGT James Doakes, an EX special opts agent who "is the only one who gets the creeps from Dexter"( the second season reveals ALOT MORE!!!), the always HOT Lauren Velez as LT Maria LaGuerta ,the sexy boss who is a bit flurtatious but who cares cause like I said she's HOT!!!, David Zayas As Angel Batista smart cop but not so smart in his quest that finds him looking for love in all the wrong places, C.S. Lee as Vince Masuka is the ultimate Pervert!...Julie Benz plays the fragile but wanting to love and be loved girlfriend, Rita. Christian Camargo is Dexter's Blood Brother who is a Prosthetist by day and wow...what a surprise...a seriel killer by night!!! Michael C. Hall is MASTERFUL as Dexter...he really pulls you in, in fact he is so good as Dexter he may find it hard to leave this character but then again no Dexter fan wants to think of the end of the show...The cast is perfect, the episodes are suspenceful and alluring with a bit of SEX, a lot of KILLING and the overall maturing of the killer, lover, forensics blood splatter expert...one Dexter Morgan. Hang on because this is only the first season...it will make watching season 2 a matter of...shall we say...life and death!!!
