"You measure yourself by the people who measure themselves by you," says the quietly wise Carter Chambers, played with gravitas and grace by a Morgan Freeman. In Rob Reiner's moving, often hilarious film The Bucket List, all sorts of people measure themselves against the two heroes, Chambers and his hospital suitemate, Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson). But as Cole finds, having spent his entire life building a Fortune 500 company, none of that much matters when cancer, the great equalizer, pays a visit. The film traces the adventures of the two unlikely friends, who meet in a hospital cancer ward, each given six months to live. The "bucket list" of the title refers to a lifelong list of goals that a teacher of Chambers once advised him to compile--and achieve--"before you kick the bucket." Soon the two are off on what may be the last grand adventure of their life, vowing to tick off as many goals (skydiving, race-car driving, seeing the wonders of the world) as they can in the time they have left. What starts as a medical melodrama becomes a road trip, yet the men's mortality realities are never far from thought. The two leads give impressive performances, and remind the viewer of just how few American films focus on the lives and loves of senior citizens. Nicholson even manages to lose his persona in his character, much as he did in About Schmidt. There's a lovely John Mayer tune, "Say (What You Need to Say)," that's perfectly matched to the film's clear-eyed view of life: What does one person leave behind as his true legacy? --A.T. Hurley

    5 out of 5 stars Your Company's Bucket List   September 1, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Carl Bard said, "Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending."

Many friends and colleagues have congratulated me on my good timing when my book, Mastering The Management Buckets: 20 Critical Competencies for Leading Your Business or Non-profit, appeared this year just after the release of the movie, The Buckets List. No credit taken, but it does come up often in radio interviews.

The hilarious movie, starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, captures the poignant final six months of two cancer patients. Tossing caution to the wind (sky diving, race-car driving, etc.), they embark on a global journey--knocking off a daring list of adventures before they "kick the bucket."

Suggestion: buy the DVD, find an appropriate film clip, and energize a future staff meeting at work with some bucket list questions for your organization. Example:
    1) In groups of three, after you've shared one item from your personal bucket list, suggest two or three bucket list goals for our organization. 2) Some call it a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) but let's call it the Numero Uno Bucket List Goal today. If we knew that our company or organization was going out of business (kicking the bucket) in the next three years, what is the most important goal we would want to achieve by the end of 2011?

Here's your chance to turn a boring staff meeting into a memorable strategic planning session for your team or department. P.S. Serve popcorn.

5 out of 5 stars It touches your soul   August 29, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Sometimes in life we feel disconnected because 'life' gets us down and out in various way. None of us are happy all the time nor sad all the time. Most of us can find the middle ground and make the most of it.

The Bucket List is a wonderful movie that touches your soul. The movie through these actors seduce you into their lives for two hours.

Our family jokes that Jack's portrayal in the movie is probably not too far off from reality for him sans the cancer.

The serenity, love of life and acceptance of destiny are embraced.
If you have not seen it, you should. If you do not own a copy, buy it.

Life is too short for you not to get your affairs in order.
Beware, this movie will drive you to create your own 'bucket list' and begin to live through it - I did!

4 out of 5 stars Not great but....   August 29, 2008
Two fine old actors doing their thing. Not a great movie but a good way to spend an hour and a half. My wife and I enjoyed it. Not sure it really required Blu Ray but they were having a sale so what the heck.

5 out of 5 stars A great movie that moves you and than lifts you with understanding.   August 27, 2008

This movie was something I had absolutely no knowledge of. My sister said you must see this movie. Which I not only saw, I had to purchase this very precious movie. If you haven't seen the movie, treat yourself with someone you care about and see the Bucketlist. These two men had cancer but it is in no way morbid. It's not about the things they couldn't do but the things they could.
