Amazon.com Describing season four of NCIS as "the season of secrets," executive producer Shane Brennan suggests that season five (offered here with 18 episodes, including a two-part finale, on five discs) is "the season of answers." For the most part, that's true--but at season's end, loyal viewers are likely to be thrown for a loop by the death of a major character and a startling set of changes bound to have a profound effect on the show's future. Picking up where the previous year left off, this new batch jumps right in with a continuation of Special Agent Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and company's pursuit of notorious international arms dealer La Grenouille ("The Frog," played by Armand Assante), whom NCIS director Jenny Shepard (Lauren Holly) is particularly keen on taking down--a quest that's complicated by the fact that the bad guy is a CIA asset, and by Agent Anthony DiNozzo's (Michael Weatherly) love affair with La Grenouille's daughter. That storyline, barely touched on thereafter, is resolved in the 14th episode, "Internal Affairs." Meanwhile, the NCIS crew is distracted by an array of other cases, most of them involving murder. Of particular interest are several episodes related to Iraq and the War on Terror: a Naval officer of Syrian descent who's suspected of being an Al Qaeda mole is murdered seconds after Gibbs talks him out of jumping off a building ledge; a Marine who's having a violent bout of post-traumatic stress after returning from the Mideast turns out to be far worse off than that; Medical Examiner Donald "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum) refuses to conduct an autopsy because of the deceased's Muslim beliefs. There's no doubt that NCIS is slick, entertaining prime-time television in every respect: writing, acting, production values, music, and so on. Still, one's appreciation of the show largely depends on the characters' likeability, and that's very much a matter of taste. Gibbs may be a chick magnet, with four former wives and a past relationship with Shepard to prove it, but he's also a taciturn fellow with horrible social skills. DiNozzo's funny and insouciant, but his smugness and incessant razzing of computer nerd Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) soon becomes tiresome, while Shepard is steely and simply unlikeable (the most appealing characters are arguably McCallum's Mallard and Pauley Perrette's mouthy Abby Sciuto, the goth-like forensic expert). Bonus material includes cast and crew commentary on various episodes and a typical assortment of featurettes. --Sam Graham

Outstanding November 21, 2008 I've enjoyed all of the seasons of NCIS and am especially happy to get the 5th season at a discount.
TJ October 30, 2008 The fifth series has all the drama, suspense, action and sex appeal of the previous seasons. The characters and the show itself appears to be improving with age. Gibbs is still the man that every woman would love to take home, DiNozo is the naughty big brother, Probie is the nice guy next door and Zeva well she is a sexy kiilling machine that most men would die for. These characters are loyally supported by Ducky and Abby who are both quirky to say the least! It's a great show and a great way to relax and waste a few hours.
Great Season - What you'd expect from NCIS! October 21, 2008 From the very first season NCIS has captured my attention! I have loved this television series and have continued to not be disappointed. I have purchased seasons 1 thru 5 and have not regretted it. If you have not yet watched it, you should! This is a tv series that has action, drama, with a sense of humor. It is a series that gets you hooked and the characters become like family to you. Hopefully, NCIS will continue for a long time! ENJOY!
Investigation, humor, drama...NCIS has it all October 19, 2008 We were a little late in joining the following of NCIS, but we certainly do not regret a single minute of this wonderful series. We own them all and look forward to the next release of each new season. Great characters for you to both love and hate. Strong story lines to hold your attention and stir the imagination. Absolutely wonderful!
Disappointed October 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have the previous 4 seasons of NCIS. NCIS is the best show on TV IMO. The 5th season was great. Why have I only given 3 stars to my review? I ordered the 5th season from Amazon and what I got was one disk was full screen and the remaining disks were widescreen. When I returned them, Amazon sent me a replacement and the same thing happened, but it was a different disk that was full screen. IMO, Amazon has been better than any other supplier of CD's, DVD's, and books with their return and refund policies, so I assume its the manufacturers. I will eventually purchase it again and by that time, maybe they will have straightened out the problem. But you just can't beat the characters of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Tony D., Ziva, McGee, Ducky, and especially Abby of any show that's on right now. There is more depth, humor, and love in NCIS than I've seen in any other show in my lifetime.
