Amazon.com The middle ground between light and shadow just became a whole lot sharper and detailed with this stellar five-disc set, which compiles the entire second season of Rod Serling's classic television series, The Twilight Zone, and gilds the whole package by including a treasure trove of supplemental material. TZ's second season (1960-61) is a stand-out in the series' history thanks to its sheer number of memorable stories; among the episodes that have achieved pop culture landmark status are the chilling "Eye of the Beholder" (a disfigured woman undergoes surgery to appear more "normal") and "The Silence" (Franchot Tone wagers that Liam Sullivan cannot silent for a year); "The Invaders" (Agnes Moorhead is pitted against tiny space travelers), "Long Distance Call" (Lost in Space's Billy Mumy converses with a deceased relative on his toy phone), and the more light-hearted "Night of the Meek," in which department store Santa Claus Art Carney gets a chance to fulfill the real St. Nick's duties. As always, the combination of sharp, intelligent scripting (mostly by Serling, but with notable contributions by Charles Beaumont, Richard Matheson, and George Clayton Johnson) and superb casting (guest stars include Cliff Robertson, Dennis Weaver, Burgess Meredith, William Shatner, John Carradine, and Don Rickles) produces television that remains as thought-provoking and entertaining today as it was over 40 years ago. Though The Twilight Zone has received numerous home video releases over the years, the aptly titled Definitive Edition is arguably the finest presentation of this series to date. Each of the episodes have been digitally remastered from original camera negatives (even the episodes filmed on videotape look good) and magnetic soundtracks; Serling's previews for upcoming episodes and advertising "billboards" (sponsor spots) have also been included, as have commentaries by Rickles, Weaver, Robertson, Shelly Berman, and other performers. Clips of Serling on The Jack Benny Show and in conversation with Mike Wallace, audio interviews with cast and crew members by Twilight Zone Companion author Marc Scott Zicree, radio adaptations of classic episodes, and even the script for "Twenty-Two," complete with Serling's notes, round out the set, which belongs in the collection of anyone who's ever been enthralled by this landmark series. Now, if only the same treatment could be afforded to Serling's other anthology program, Night Gallery

Enojying the classics May 13, 2007 I've been fascinated by The Twilight Zone series since I was about 7 years old. I'm 41 now. Starting last year, I bit the bullet and decided to start getting the series on DVD. Just purchased Season 2 and while there are great episodes in each season, I have to say that a heavy concentration of my favorites are here. "Shadow Play" and "The Obsolete Man" are among the best works ever made for TV in my view. However, even the "lame" episodes in this season are fun to watch.
This is a must for any Twilight Zone fan. And if you don't know the show, this season is perhaps the best one to start with.
My only complaint -- and this is just a manufacturing defect, is that there were two "Disc 4's" in my set. Fortunately, it was just a mislabeling. The "other" disc 4 was actually disc 5, so everything was fine. I just had to write a 5 on the mislabeled disc and I'm good to go.
Thanks to all of the talented writers, directors, actors, composers, camera operators and all of the others responsible for making Twilight Zone a timeless and enjoyable piece of art.
Twilight Zone season 2 - DVD quality lacking April 10, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have found for whatever reason, the quality of the DVDs for this season are not as good as the other seasons. I have all 5 seasons on DVD, and only season 2 seems to have jumping horizontal lines and occasional wash out of picture in at least 4-5 different episodes. This is peculiar since I also have all episodes on VHS tape as well, and NO episodes have this tracking issue on VHS. I bought the DVDs in hope of replacing the VHS copies, but the VHS copies of season 2 are visibly much better quality than the DVD. It seems in the transference of the episodes for this season onto DVD was poorly done. I have noted this on not one, not two, but three different versions of the season 2 collection. They all seem to happen in the same episodes as well. One episode in particular that I have found one of the worst is "The Lateness of the Hour", which incidently happens to be one of my favorite episodes. It also doesn't seem to be isolated to one disk, I have witnessed it on at least one episode on each disk. Has anyone else come across this in season 2? I'm wondering if all season 2 collections are hosed or if I have come across a streak of bad copies.
ANOTHER GREAT SEASON January 16, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful

Excellent Series January 7, 2007 30 out of 31 found this review helpful
First time i saw this show was in 1983,and they showed it late at night. I was amazed at this series, which seemed to realy make you think.....what if?You watch an episode with all its twists and turns and at the end you would be suprized by a fascinating ending. I couldnt wait each week for each episode, and i then found out some of my friends were also watching it.I remember we just sat around talking one day about the episode To Serve Man.We just couldnt get over how well that particular episode was made. The show ran for about a year then, but i didnt see it again till i started buying the episodes on DVD.That was in 2002.Its great they are putting out alot of series out on DVD nowdays so we dont have to wait such lenghts of time till we see them again. Now this series was filmed in black and white, but i realy think that it adds to the mystique of the atmosphere surrounding each episode. If you purchase this season then you cant go wrong with this masterpeice work from Rod Serling. You cant go wrong with any season of this series!!!
