This HBO documentary is based on a highly original idea: tell the story of baseball from the Great Depression era through the late 1950s using footage from home-movie cameras shot by fans and players. The result is a marvelous look at baseball in America as seen from the ground--the culture of stadiums, the ritual of afternoon games, the spiritually sustaining rivalries. Among the truly unexpected sights is color footage of the 1938 World Series, not only from inside the stadium walls but from the street as traffic cops, crowds, and vehicles amassed. It also covers World War II's impact on the game, and, of course, the heroes, often caught in relaxed, unselfconscious moments. Arguably more defined and even more lyrical than its predecessor, When It Was a Game 2 moves from a general celebration of baseball culture in America to a specific focus on various facets of the game's history, including the special relationship between game announcers and fans and the farm-team system during the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. Brooklyn's assimilation of the Dodgers into their community identity is covered quite winningly as is the heartbreak of the team's desertion to California. A must have for true baseball fans October 7, 2008
Doesn't matter who your team is, if you grew up on baseball and plan your week during the season around what games are on when, you need to get this DVD set. It will give you a new appreciation for the game.
The footage is great to see. Though I have seen alot of baseball footage, the home movie feel of this collection is special. To see the parks and how they looked "back when" was special.
Great job by those who put this together and a special collection for any baseball fan.
Baseball History at it's best August 29, 2008
For those who love baseball there is no better history of the greats from the past. It is great to see player on film that in some cases were gone before I was old enough to watch them play. You get a view of the old ball parks and uniforms. A must for baseball fans every where.

This is an excellent dvd collection for any one who loves baseball. This set is a wonderful commemoration of a time that, for many of us, when baseball was played for the love of it, not just for the money now.
The set provides a dose of reality for most baseball fans, and addresses the issues, problems, and success of base ball through the generations.
