Amazon.com A movie that would not have been out of place in the run of paranoid-political thrillers of the 1970s, Shooter works an entertaining variation on the assassination picture. Mark Wahlberg, carrying over good mojo from The Departed, slides neatly into the character of Bob Lee Swagger, master marksman. Swagger has retreated from his duty as an off-the-books hired gun for the military, having become disillusioned with his government (switching on his TV at his remote mountain cabin, he mutters, "Let's see what kind of lies they're trying to sell us today."). Ah, but the government needs Swagger to scope out the location of a rumored attempt on the life of the president, so a shadowy government operative (Danny Glover) begs Swagger to use his sniper's skills to out-fox the assassin. From there--well, spoilers are not fair, since the movie has a few legitimate shocks and a very nice wrong-man scenario about to unfold. A novel by the Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Stephen Hunter gives the movie a logical spine, even if the premise itself is the stuff of conspiracy theorists. Wahlberg gets support from Michael Pena, as a skeptical FBI agent; Kate Mara, as a trustworthy widow; and Ned Beatty, trailing along memories of Network, as a supremely cynical Senator. Along with the well-executed action sequences (the previously unreliable director Antoine Fuqua gets it in gear here), the movie includes a few potshots at the Bush administration. No, that doesn't put Shooter at the level of The Parallax View or All the President's Men, but it provides some tang along with the flying bullets. --Robert Horton Beyond Shooter More Sniper / Hit Man Movies on DVD | More DVDs with Mark Wahlberg | The Novel | Stills from Shooter (click for larger image)

Positive review January 7, 2009 I need to add a positive review for this movie. It was definitely my second favorite movie of 2008 (I liked Saw V better). This movie has a lot of action and explosions in it and kept me wondering until the end. I really like Walberg and he does not disappoint in this movie.
Great American Action Movie! January 7, 2009 This was a great action movie that makes you feel good about being an American. And you get to see lots of shooting and destruction. What's not to love?
Bad Bourne December 29, 2008 This was a decent shoot em up flick. I gave it 4 stars because I can still recall the plot-so many are forgetable. Its a bad attitude Bourne type movie and I liked Walberg as lead. If you liked Last Man Standing and Reindeer Games, type of off beat rough; you will probably like this. Not warm-Not fuzzy.
Great movie! December 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is NOT my usual genre, but I got coaxed into watching it and was very impressed with both Mark Wahlberg and the movie. It was a bit more graphic than I am comfortable with, but I closed my eyes a lot. I was enthralled from the opening frames until the end. I highly recommend it!
Ridiculously implausible but it has nice, big explosions December 15, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The notion that some dark elements would attempt to kill a foreign official while a few feet away from the US president and try to get away with murder by framing some experienced, combat tested sniper who was fooled into believing that he was really doing a feasibility study of whether the president could be killed by pointing a sniper rifle at him from a mile away... you got the idea?
And it's getting worse from there. While nearly fatally wounded, our hero loses about 5000 FBI, Secret Service and regular cops, all hot on his tail, then he comes back to kill everyone guilty... Oh well, the cable channels need movies to kill some time, I suppose.
And, one more thing. Why would anyone ever want to build an oil pipeline through Ethiopia? The correct answer is "no one would". Ethiopia is bordered by Somalia (hostile), Eritrea (hostile), Kenya (has no oil) and Sudan (has oil but also has hundreds of miles of Red Sea shore and has no need for an Ethiopian pipeline, passing through its rebellious South.
Why 2 stars? I suppose it's because it has a couple of well-known actors, there are some nice, very large explosions and because it's good to see corrupt politicians receive their well-deserved punishment but, overall, watching this movie is wasting one's time.
