This set of two DVDs demonstrates, via synchronized video and three-dimensional animation, how to perform ultrasound-assisted peripheral nerve blocks. It presents all blocks commonly performed for the upper and lower limbs, including infraclavicular and interscalene blocks and blocks of the sciatic nerve, lumbar plexus, and femoral nerve. Each block is presented step by step with voice-over narration and synchronized video clips of ultrasound localization of the nerve, surrounding anatomy, needle advancement, and anesthetic application. Some great content but very poorly executed. October 10, 2008

The previous version of this product did not feature ultrasound so I was excited to order these DVDs. I was very disappointed on receiving them to find they were Windows (XP & Vista) only, despite there being no mention of this on the publisher's website and the last version being for Mac and Windows. No matter, I found a quad-core Vista machine to run the DVD.
The application immediately changed the screen resolution to 1024x768 despite it being a 22" screen and then placed the menu off-centre so that many of the buttons couldn't be reached. The player used to display the blocks crashed on launch. This was not inspiring after paying over $300 for the two DVDs.By increasing the screen resolution to 1028x1024 through the Windows control panel I could access all the menu buttons and the player actually played without crashing. For the anatomy viewer the buttons wouldn't work at that resolution and it had to be switched back to 1024x768. It seems crazy in 2008 that a multimedia product can be this badly done.
The anatomical and ultrasound content is excellent. The videos are a little slow-paced but that might be better for trainees. The 3D viewer and simulated ultrasound are the first I have seen of their kind and are an excellent resource for teaching.
The content is worth five stars, but I recommend not purchasing this until a version is released with the display bugs fixed.
