Nearly 20 years after riding his last Crusade, Harrison Ford makes a welcome return as archaeologist/relic hunter Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, an action-packed fourth installment that's, in a nutshell, less memorable than the first three but great nostalgia for fans of the series. Producer George Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (War of the Worlds) set the film during the cold war, as the Soviets--replacing Nazis as Indy's villains of choice and led by a sword-wielding Cate Blanchett with black bob and sunglasses--are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has mystical powers related to a city of gold. After escaping from them in a spectacular opening action sequence, Indy is coerced to head to Peru at the behest of a young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) whose friend--and Indy's colleague--Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured for his knowledge of the skull's whereabouts. Whatever secrets the skull holds are tertiary; its reveal is the weakest part of the movie, as the CGI effects that inevitably accompany it feel jarring next to the boulder-rolling world of Indy audiences knew and loved. There's plenty of comedy, delightful stunts--ants play a deadly role here--and the return of Raiders love interest Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, once shrill but now softened, giving her ex-love bemused glances and eye-rolls as he huffs his way to save the day. Which brings us to Ford: bullwhip still in hand, he's a little creakier, a lot grayer, but still twice the action hero of anyone in film today. With all the anticipation and hype leading up to the film's release, perhaps no reunion is sweeter than that of Ford with the role that fits him as snugly as that fedora hat. --Ellen A. Kim

2 out of 5 stars Never should have been made   November 23, 2008
What a disappointment! Ford doesn't seem very engaged, and the first half of the movie is routine and boring. It picks up at the end - mostly because of special effects. I'm amazed that they are talking about making another one...

5 out of 5 stars The Thrill is Back!!   November 23, 2008
Indiana Jones does not disappoint... a little older and more rugged looking Harrison Ford only makes him a more realistic character. Gonna watch it again.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Indiana Jones Movie   November 23, 2008
We went to the show to see this movie and loved it. I couldn't wait to own the DVD so we could watch it again and again. This movie had the feel of the other Indiana Jones movies, it was an action movie without taking itself too seriously. If you didn't see this movie in a theater shame on you but buy the DVD and it will be money well spent and as far as I can remember there is nothing in the movie that would prohibit this from being a 'family' night movie. A well done movie that everyone can enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding   November 23, 2008
The product was received in short order and in very good condition. I have really enjoyed reading the books.

3 out of 5 stars missing the spark from the past   November 23, 2008

I really liked most of the Indiana Jones movies and even caught some of the Young Indiana Jones on tv now and then. I really wanted to like Kingdom of the Crystal Skull also, but the movie is just missing the fun spark from the past ones. The writing for Shia's character just is not good, he's given a stiff language to try to act with, he has much greater range then he's given the opportunity to display by the writing/script...actually almost all the characters are boxed in by the lack of good writing.
I didn't think the premise for the ending was all that bad or outrageous especially considering the "pulp", mystery powers, adventure seeker background the original movies Speilberg and Lucas tried to capture originally.
The movie could've been so much better, but at least it's good enough where they may be able to renew the series -- though without Harrison Ford who did look just too old and tired at times in the movie.
Overall the movie isn't as good as Raiders and is more akin to Temple of Doom but falling short in quality compared to that one also.
