Amazon.com Rescue Me is a wake up call for every man who (as a kid) dreamed about becoming a fireman and every woman who fantasized about being with one. As flawed and complicated as they are selfless and heroic, the fire fighters in this FX series are a compelling lot. They deal with infidelity, drug addiction, and sexual abuse on a daily basis and make it seem like old hat. But the characters are so well thought out that they almost always make viewers care about what's developing in their lives. This second season surpasses the debut year in terms of story lines and pacing. Series creator Denis Leary (Ice Age, No Cure for Cancer) reprises his role of Tommy Gavin. Separated from his wife and children and also battling a drinking addiction, Tommy is now working as the new guy in a Staten Island firehouse. He isn't a hero so much as he's his own best victim. Luckily, he's still got some loyal friends who're quick to nip his pity-parties short: "You feeling a little angry? You feeling a little hurt? You feeling betrayed? Well, congratulations, you're feeling, and you're feeling because you're sober." With his hangdog features and fast-paced speech pattern, Leary is surprisingly believable in the role. Returning character Chief Reilly (Jack McGee) faces some struggles of his own, as he watches his wife's spiral downward thanks to Alzheimer's. And it's not much easier for Franco (Daniel Sunjata), who is trying to figure out the best ways to care for his daughter while working an unpredictable schedule. While the drama on this show can sometimes be fiery and intense, the series provides enough biting humor to lend it an air of humanity and, at times, even a little warmth. It doesn't leave viewers wanting to be fire fighters, but rather empathizing with them. --Jae-Ha Kim

Ignite Your Television with Rescue Me. August 2, 2008 Rescue Me is one of two good reasons to own a television these days. (Mad Men is the other.) Set in post-9/11 New York City, Season One of Rescue Me (which premiered in 2004) introduced viewers to a crew of NYC firefighters working, smoking, drinking, and socializing together. The show centers on Denis Leary, who plays the role of a self-destructive firefighter named Tommy Gavin. He is a mercurial, chain-smoking anti-hero, who struggles with alcoholism and dysfunctional relationships. Although Tommy and his wife Janet (Andrea Roth) were separated, he continued to live across the street clinging to the hope that he could salvage his marriage, despite the fact that his estranged wife was already dating a new, white-collar guy. Despite his many flaws, Tommy is a good father who loves his three children. He lost his cousin, Jimmy Keefe, in the September 11th attacks, and was secretly seeing Jimmy's widow, Sheila. Tommy is frequently haunted by the many victims of 9/11 he failed to save.
Season One also introduced us to a cast of equally well-drawn supporting characters. For instance, viewers met Chief Jerry Reilly (Jack McGee), a homophobic father of a gay firefighter. Firefighter Sean Garrity decided to secretly date one of his coworker's former lovers. That coworker, Franco Rivera (Daniel Sunjata), discovered he had a 5-year-old daughter with a psycho ex-girlfriend. Lt. Kenneth Shea (John Scurti) coped with his post-9/11 trauma by writing poetry. Mike Siletti (Mike Lombardi) fell for a "fat chick" named Theresa (Ashlie Atkinson). Firefighter Laura Miles is always at odds with her male coworkers, and with Tommy in particular.
Season Two premiered on June 21, 2005, and picks up where Season One ended, with Tommy now working at a new firehouse on Staten Island. He eventually returns to his old house when his co-workers discover Tommy's replacement, Sully, has a fetish for wearing women's clothing. While Tommy continues in his attempts to reconcile with his family, he not only discovers he has a half-brother, a priest and a suspected pedophile, but he also loses a child in a drunk-driving incident.
It's easy to understand why this show was nominated for an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series, and an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series during its first season. The show continues to realistically confront social taboos like dysfunctional relationships, depression, alcoholism, homophobia, Alzheimer's disease, and the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Rescue Me is must-see television.

this is a fine product. it was shipped in a good time and in good condition
Everyone needs to be rescued January 10, 2008 At least, everyone on this show does! Tommy Gavin goes sober after years of drinking, reconnects with his wife and kids, and even tries being mellow for a while...only to see everything torn asunder by the death of a family member, the loss of potential millions after his dad's newest wife departs, the abuse of his mistress by her sometime girlfriend, and another close call on the job. In the meantime, the other firefighters contend with the heartbreak of a spouse with Alzheimer's, the departure of the only female in their squad, a girlfriend who turns out to be a crook, a painkiller dependence, and more. Everyone, especially Denis Leary, gives a strong performance as we see more layers of complexity develop in these characters over the course of the second season. Tatum O'Neal appears late in the season as Tommy's fiery, troubled sister as well. I wonder if things could possibly get any worse for these folks in season 3!
