The lives of two stoic cowboys and five abused Chinese women become intertwined in Walter Hill's sprawling miniseries Broken Trail. Print Ritter (Academy Award winner Robert Duvall) and his nephew Tom Harte (Thomas Haden Church, Sideways) agree to deliver a herd of 500 horses from Oregon to Wyoming. Along the way, they rescue the young women--most of them still just girls--who're being transported to a brothel to have their virginity auctioned off. When the madam sees she is about to lose the girls, she screams at Tom, "What about my property?" He shouts back, "That's the price of being a capitalist, lady." Unable to overcome the language barrier, Print assigns numbers to the girls. Number 3, Sun Foy (Gwendoline Yeo, Desperate Housewives) is the most fearless and perceptive of them. Though the others don't want to be called Number 4--an unlucky numeral in their homeland--Ye Fung (Olivia Cheng), the most tragic of the group, doesn't care. Targeted for her beauty, she finds herself unable to overcome the trauma. The number suits her, in her mind. Along the way, Print and Tom rescue Nola Johns (Greta Scacchi), the proverbial hooker with the heat of gold, who was forced into prostitution after her husband died.

The cinematography is gorgeous as the camera sweeps over the lush landscape (the Canadian Rockies subbing in for wild West of the late 1800s) and Hill does a formidable job of pacing this 3-hour drama with just the right balance of dialogue and action. For Duvall, Broken Trail is the last piece to his Western trilogy, which started with the miniseries Lonesome Dove followed by the feature film Open Range. He is instantly likeable as a father figure and the viewer never doubts that his intention for the girls is honorable. As for Haden Church, he has never been as appealing as he is in this role. Gruff and flawed, he softens when he exchanges shy glances with Sun Foy. The trek is long and hard and the unlikely band of travelers will face much hardship. If not as satisfying as the rich, detailed Lonesome Dove, Broken Trail makes up for it with a wonderful storyline and some fine acting by all involved. As for the conclusion, it may surprise some viewers who are expecting a more traditional version of the happy ending. --Jae-Ha Kim

5 out of 5 stars A FASCINATING TAKE ON THE WESTERN TALE.   November 19, 2008
After all the westerns ever made, you'd think that they'd run out of good ideas after a while. But "Broken Trail" proves that there is still life, and fresh blood, to be seen in THE American film genre. The three-hour film finds an uncle and nephew running a herd of horses to Wyoming, and unexpectedly become guardians of five Oriental women meant to become prostitutes. The journey that they all take together is a truly fascinating one, which has never been covered in this genre before.
While the storytelling and cinematography are great, the two highlights are the casting and the music. Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church are fantastic as the two male leads, and well-deserved the Emmys they won for their roles. The strong supporting cast, of which there are too many to name here, do fantastic as well. The score by David Mansfield and Van Dyke Parks is truly memorable, and adds to the strengths of this epic piece.
As a fan of the western, I truly enjoyed "Broken Trail." If you enjoy this genre, and the acting talents of Duvall and Haden Church, then you'll enjoy it as well.
Movie/DVD Grade: A

5 out of 5 stars Broken Trail   November 1, 2008
I enjoy a great Weatern especially one starring Robert Duvall.
I now have, what he calls his trilogy viz. Lonesome Dove, Open Range, and now Broken Trail.
Robert Duvall and Clint Eastwood Weaterns are thoroughly enjoyable.
I should like to mention I find Amazon provide an excellent service including s perfect follow-up to the purchase.
Thank You. Mike Davies

5 out of 5 stars Rober Duvall   October 31, 2008
A very good western, with somewhat of a chick flick imbedded, meaning my wife enjoyed it too.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a "western" that embraces more than mere machismo . . .   October 31, 2008
As an old lover of "oaters" who thought the genre was mired in the narcissism of the Zane Grey/Owen Wister perceptions until that high watermark and irreducible teleseries, "Lonesome Dove," I was pleasantly surprised AND impressed by this two-parter, equally "true" and moving if not quite as embracive and detailed as the former.
This Walter Hill effort boasts as flawless a production, from writing through casting and the visuals, plus right-on performancw all around, as to set its own standards.
And, as a Chinese-American, its singular and "authentic" period Chinese plotline peg struck me as precedential AND arresting.
Now, if only someone could make the "back story" to the five Chinese girls who literally "make" this movie what it is, playing off the standard western white hat/black hat themes. Beautifully, I must add.
In my book, one for the books.

5 out of 5 stars Robert Duvall is the CLASSIC COWBOY in BROKEN TRAIL now in HD 5.1 Blu-ray Widescreen Home Theater (w/HDMI) (explained)   October 27, 2008
Experiencing this 2006 2 part 3 plus hour mini series on tv (4:3 ratio)was awesome. Some areas even showed it in HD (16:9 ratio) which made it even better.

Now for the first time ever we can re-experience this TOP RATED WESTERN DRAMA in FULL HD (1080p) Blu-ray. UNBELIEVABLE!! Beautifully photographed and OUTSTANDING casted western classic to be.

For your HD Home Theater w/HDMI and 5.1 Sound "BROKEN TRAIL" explodes off the screen with its clarity and awesome sound.

My qualifying statement: My HD Home Theater weighs in at about $2000 plus movies. A breakdown is; a Mitsubishi HD Projector (HC-1500) $800 (orig $1495), a Sony Blu-ray 5.1 Sound System (HT-SS2300)$399 (orig $499) and the Sony PLAYSTATION 3 w/Blu-ray player $399 (orig $499). (see my reviews) Sony HDMI cables $150 and HD Screen Paint and Kit for my 108" viewing wall screen $180. With this 1080p system I've created a HD Home Theater presentation sight and sound equal to an IMAX (on a smaller scale) experience.

This 1080p w/5.1 sound Widescreen showing of "BROKEN TRAIL" blows your minds eyes and ears, period. Seeing this Classically beautifully photographed and well acted Western makes you appreciate the American West and its colorful characters. Robert Duvall once again (Lonesome Dove and Open Range) he is the true Cowboy we can idolize.

A must have western for your Home Theater Library. Encore showings will be many.
Enjoy.
