Holmes movies and TV shows, plus two films noir November 7, 2008 "Sherlock Holmes," the most renowned of all fictional detectives, was the creation of Scottish author and physician Arthur Conan Doyle. The stories were published in various British magazines beginning in 1887. Over the years Conan Doyle tried more than once to kill off the character, but public clamor made him reconsider. Doyle wrote four Holmes novels and fifty-six short stories, right up until the knighted author's death in 1930.
These five DVDs in BCI's LEGENDS OF HOLLYWOOD: SHERLOCK HOLMES contain one hour-length Holmes movie per side. Also included on the A side of each is an episode of the half-hour 1954 TV series, starring Ronald Howard (son of Leslie) as Holmes, Howard Marion-Crawford as Watson and Archie Duncan as Inspector LeStrade.
Contents of a sixth "bonus" DVD are two superb examples of film noir and some vintage movie trailers.
Transfer quality of the public domain material on these discs varies from quite good to only fair.
All 39 TV series episodes are available on MILL CREEK's SHERLOCK HOLMES - THE COMPLETE SERIES.

Sherlock Review July 14, 2008 A good collection of early Sherlock Holmes films. Not quite as good as the PBS series, but still enjoyable.
